TL;DR: Shopify's published process is apply, call, Craft Assessment, Life Story, meet the team. The Life Story is the round most people under-prepare for, and it isn't a coding round at all. On AI: the CEO's memo makes AI use a job expectation, but Shopify's hiring pages don't say what's allowed inside an interview, so treat anything more specific as unconfirmed.

Searching "Shopify interview AI" returns two kinds of pages: ones that explain the process and ones that explain the memo. Very few connect them, and many blur what Shopify has published with what candidates and prep sites say. This page keeps the two apart.

The Official Process

From Shopify's careers FAQ, in order:

  1. Apply.
  2. Initial call. 15 to 30 minutes with a recruiter or hiring manager. For R&D applicants, per the FAQ, you pass this step and go directly into pair programming before the Life Story.
  3. Craft Assessment. 60 to 75 minutes with at least one person from your craft, about how you approach the work. It also includes a brief predictive assessment on how you approach problems and notice details.
  4. The Life Story. 30 to 60 minutes with a recruiter.
  5. Meet the team. Three to five people.
  6. Decision.

Shopify says the order and number of interviews vary by role. If you're rejected, engineering roles ask for a 6 to 12 month wait before reapplying.

The Life Story Is the Round to Prepare For

Shopify's own description: a conversation about the themes of your career journey, what you learned, and how you made a difference. They are interested in "the trophies and the bruises": problems solved, challenges, decisions, lessons. Their advice is to reflect on hits and misses, pivotal points, proudest moments and hardest projects, then settle into "a genuine, two-sided conversation."

A 2022 post on Shopify's engineering blog adds the scoring side: the Life Story is a roughly one-hour conversation assessed on five traits, Impact, Readiness, Trust, Engagement and Self-awareness. That post predates the AI memo, so read it as the structure of the round, not current policy.

What this means in practice: a chronological resume walk-through underperforms. Pick three or four projects and for each be able to say what the situation was, what you decided and why, what went wrong, and what you'd do differently. The "bruises" part is where Self-awareness gets scored, and it's where polished, rehearsed answers fall flat. A mock interview with someone cutting in to ask "why that decision?" shows you quickly which stories are thin.

What the AI Memo Says (and What It Doesn't)

On April 7, 2025, CEO Tobi Lütke posted an internal memo publicly on X. The line everyone quotes: "Reflexive AI usage is now a baseline expectation at Shopify." As reported from the memo, AI use is folded into performance and peer reviews, AI exploration is expected to dominate the prototyping phase of projects, and teams are asked to show why AI can't do the work before asking for more headcount.

Notice what that is: a policy for employees. Shopify's engineering careers page echoes the culture, but it is also culture copy, not an interview rule. The hiring FAQ I read says nothing about AI during interviews.

So what do you do with that?

  • Expect AI fluency to matter. A company that reviews employees on AI use will probably ask how you use it. Have a concrete, honest answer ready: what you use, for what, and a time it was wrong and you caught it.
  • Don't assume the pair programming round allows your own AI tools. Prep sites claim a 75-minute session where you can bring Cursor or Claude Code. I found no Shopify page confirming that, so it's unverified. Ask your recruiter exactly what is permitted, and do it in writing.
  • A second-hand framework exists. A CoderPad write-up of a talk by Shopify's Farhan Thawar describes sorting interviews into "no AI, AI optional, AI mandatory." That's reporting of a talk, not a Shopify page, but it's a useful mental model for asking your recruiter which one your round is.

How to Prepare

  1. Write your Life Story. Four projects, each with a decision, a mistake and a lesson, in plain words. Speak them aloud; written and spoken versions come out differently.
  2. Practice pair programming as collaboration. Narrate, ask clarifying questions, and talk through tradeoffs. If tools are allowed you'll have practiced with them; if not, you'll have practiced without. Either way, find out which in advance.
  3. Prepare an AI story that isn't a slogan. One real example where AI saved you time, one where you rejected its output, and how you decided.
  4. Confirm the rules per round. Policies differ by company and by round; see how Google and Anthropic handle it for contrast. Whatever tools you use, follow the rules you've been given for each round.
