One-way video interview · recording, no retake

HireVue Interview Assistant

A prompt, a countdown, and one take.

AceRound hears the question as it plays, and puts a structured answer — opening line, which of your projects to reach for, the number worth quoting — on an overlay that screen recording and screen sharing never capture.

No credit card. Works on HireVue, Spark Hire, Willo, VidCruiter, myInterview and Modern Hire.

What actually happens in those two minutes

A one-way round is not a conversation. It is a recording session, and it punishes the thing most people are good at — thinking out loud with another human.

  1. 0:00Prompt appears

You read it once. There is no interviewer to ask what they mean by "a difficult stakeholder".

  2. 0:05Prep timer runs

Usually 30 seconds. Most of it goes on deciding which story to tell, not on structuring it.

  3. 0:35Recording starts

The red dot is on. Whatever comes out of your mouth in the next 90 seconds is what the recruiter sees.

  4. 2:05Take is submitted

Often with no retake. It sits in a review queue for weeks, next to forty other candidates answering the same four prompts.

The four prompts you will almost certainly get

And what goes wrong on each when there is nobody on the other end to react to you.

"Tell me about yourself."

Where it goes wrong

Candidates narrate their whole CV and run out of time before the relevant part.

With AceRound on screen

Lead with the role you are applying for, then two proof points, then why this company. AceRound puts that skeleton on screen with your own numbers already filled in.

"Describe a time you handled conflict."

Where it goes wrong

Without a listener nodding along, people over-explain the setup and never reach the resolution.

You get Situation and Task compressed to one line each, so the recording spends its time on what you actually did and what changed.

"Why do you want to work here?"

Where it goes wrong

Generic answers are obvious on a recording — the recruiter has heard the same sentence forty times today.

With AceRound on screen

Pulls specifics from the job description you uploaded, so the answer could not have been given to any other company.

"Walk me through this technical decision."

Where it goes wrong

Talking through architecture with no whiteboard and no feedback is where strong engineers sound vague.

Gives you the trade-off framing — what you chose, what you gave up, what you would do differently — in the order that reads well on video.

What HireVue can and cannot see

The most searched question about one-way interviews, answered plainly.

Does HireVue record your screen?

The answer itself is a camera and microphone recording. Some employers additionally switch on browser or proctoring checks, which can log tab switches or a second window. AceRound’s panel is drawn outside the layer that screen recording and screen sharing read from, so it does not land in the recording — check the rules your employer set for the specific assessment.

Does it track eye movement?

HireVue dropped facial analysis from its assessments in 2021, and scoring today is based on what you say rather than where you look. Reading a wall of text still looks like reading, which is why AceRound keeps suggestions short enough to glance at — points to speak from, not a script.

Can I have notes next to me?

There is no live interviewer, and most employers do not ban notes outright — but the policy differs by company and role, and it is written on the invitation. Read it first. AceRound is a study aid, not a way around a rule someone has stated.
