Does HireVue Record Your Screen? Complete Truth for 2026
Does HireVue record your screen during interviews? No — but the details matter. Learn exactly what HireVue captures at each stage, from prep time to coding assessments.

TL;DR: HireVue does not record your screen during standard video interviews — only your camera and microphone are captured. Screen sharing only occurs during coding assessments, requires explicit browser permission, and is always disclosed in advance. Prep time is never recorded, and practice responses go only to you.
You're sitting at your laptop, 10 minutes before your HireVue interview. The webcam light is on. You're wondering: can the platform see everything on your screen right now? Is it logging which other tabs you have open? Will it flag you if you glance at your notes?
These are reasonable questions. HireVue is used by more than 700 companies, processes millions of candidate interviews, and operates largely as a black box to the people sitting in front of it. The anxiety is understandable.
The direct answer is: HireVue does not record your screen during standard interviews. But "standard" carries some nuance worth understanding — because how HireVue works in a coding assessment differs from how it works in a video interview, and those differences matter to how you prepare.
The 4 Recording Contexts: What HireVue Actually Captures
Most HireVue anxiety comes from treating it as one monolithic thing. It isn't. There are four distinct recording contexts in a HireVue session, each with different rules:
1. Prep time — the period before you record your answer, where you read the question and gather your thoughts. HireVue shows a clear "Not Recording" indicator during this phase. Nothing is captured. You can look at notes, open another tab, or just think out loud. No data is sent to the employer during prep time.
2. Practice responses — some HireVue interviews let you record a practice answer before your real take. These are for your benefit only. They are not transmitted to the employer. You can review them, delete them, and record them as many times as the platform allows.
3. Live interview responses — this is the actual recorded answer HireVue sends to the employer. Your camera and microphone are active. Your screen is not. HireVue captures your video, audio, and response timing. It does not monitor other applications, scan your filesystem, or access any browser tab outside its own interface.
4. Coding and technical assessments — this is the exception. When an employer configures a coding challenge or technical exercise within HireVue, screen sharing may be enabled. If it is, you'll see an explicit browser permission prompt asking you to share your screen, a specific window, or a specific tab. You have to grant this permission manually. It's always disclosed, and you can see the recording status indicator throughout.
Understanding which context you're in at any given moment eliminates most of the ambiguity.
Can HireVue See Your Screen During the Standard Video Interview?
No. HireVue's standard video interview captures camera and audio only. It does not access your file system, monitor other applications, or see what's on your screen outside the HireVue browser tab or app.
This is confirmed in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's Privacy Impact Assessment for HireVue, which documents the platform's data collection scope for federal government hiring. The assessment explicitly covers what HireVue collects: "video and audio of candidate interview responses." Screen content of candidate devices is not in scope.
The same scope appears in the VA's 2024 Privacy Impact Assessment, which is the most recently updated federal government audit of HireVue's data practices.
Does HireVue Record During Prep Time?
No. HireVue displays a clear "Not Recording" status during prep time. The recording only begins after a 3-second countdown following your decision to start recording your answer.
This matters practically: you can use prep time to glance at notes, organize your thoughts, or re-read the question. The platform is not watching you during this window. Employers receive no data from prep time.
Using AI assistance during prep time? The ethics depend on the employer's rules, not HireVue's technical enforcement. If an employer's assessment instructions prohibit outside resources, that's a policy restriction — not something HireVue itself blocks. The full discussion of AI use in interviews is worth reading before your session.
Does HireVue Detect Screen Sharing?
Screen sharing is opt-in and browser-controlled. HireVue cannot initiate screen sharing silently — browsers require explicit user permission through a native permission dialog that shows you exactly what is being shared.
During a standard video interview, no screen sharing prompt appears. During a technical assessment that requires screen sharing, you'll see a browser prompt that looks like a standard "Share your screen" dialog. You choose whether to share your whole screen, a specific application window, or just a specific browser tab.
If you're ever uncertain whether screen sharing is active, the browser's native sharing indicator remains visible throughout the session — typically a colored border around the shared content or a persistent notification in the browser toolbar.
HireVue Screen Monitoring: What About Tab Switching?
HireVue logs tab-switching behavior as browser focus events — not via screen capture. When you switch away from the HireVue tab during an active recording, the browser fires a "blur" event that the platform can detect. This is flagged as a behavioral signal in the assessment data that employers can review.
It is not an automatic disqualifier. HireVue does not auto-reject candidates who switch tabs. The flag goes into the assessment record, where a human reviewer at the employer decides how to interpret it. A brief tab switch might be irrelevant. Frequent switching during a short answer might raise questions.
The practical implication: during the actual recorded response, stay in the HireVue tab. During prep time, you're not being monitored this way.
This is distinct from what we cover in depth in our full HireVue cheating detection guide, which also addresses AI-generated answers, eye contact monitoring, and how HireVue's automated scoring actually works.
What Employers Actually See vs. What HireVue's AI Flags Internally
There's an important distinction between what employers receive and what HireVue's AI processing generates internally.
What employers see:
- Your recorded video and audio responses
- Response timing data (how long you took per question, how much of your prep time you used)
- A competency score if the employer has enabled HireVue's structured scoring
- Any browser focus flags (tab switching) if that option is enabled in their configuration
What HireVue's AI processes internally:
- Transcript of your responses (via speech-to-text)
- Linguistic analysis aligned to the job's competency model
- Response relevance scoring
What HireVue no longer does: HireVue publicly discontinued automated facial expression and emotion analysis in 2021 following regulatory pressure and an FTC complaint filed by EPIC alleging the practice was deceptive and potentially discriminatory. Current HireVue scoring focuses on speech content and structure, not facial microexpressions.
Your Legal Rights: Data Access, Deletion, and State AI Laws
If you're based in the EU, you have GDPR rights to request access to your HireVue data and to request deletion. Submit these requests directly to the employer who used HireVue — they're the data controller; HireVue is the processor.
In the U.S., Illinois candidates have rights under BIPA (Biometric Information Privacy Act) and the Illinois AI Video Interview Act, which requires employers using AI interview tools to disclose that AI is being used, explain what characteristics are being evaluated, and obtain written consent. A class action (Deyerler v. HireVue) settled in 2023 over BIPA allegations.
Other states with AI hiring disclosure laws as of 2026: Maryland and New York City require notice of automated employment decision tools. California is in the process of expanding its AI accountability requirements to hiring contexts.
The default data retention period is three years from the date of the interview. If you weren't hired, you can request deletion earlier by contacting the employer.
How to Prepare for a HireVue Interview Using AI
Since HireVue doesn't restrict what you do during prep time, the most useful preparation is getting to a point where you don't need to look at notes at all — because your answers are genuinely practiced and well-structured, not because you're being watched.
AI mock interview tools let you simulate HireVue's format — timed questions, no second takes, camera-on pressure — before the actual session. Running 5–10 practice sessions in HireVue's format is more useful than reviewing notes the night before, because the format itself is the challenge: most people give worse answers when they're being recorded with a countdown than when they're practicing quietly.
AceRound AI supports HireVue-format mock sessions — set a time limit per question, practice without second takes, and get structured feedback on your answers' competency alignment. Worth running before your actual session.
FAQ
Does HireVue record your screen even when you're not answering? No. HireVue only records during active response recording — indicated by a countdown and recording status. Prep time, inter-question navigation, and the practice mode are not captured and sent to employers.
Can HireVue see other apps on my computer? No. HireVue operates within a browser tab or its mobile app. It has no visibility into other applications running on your device.
Does HireVue record what I type? No. HireVue doesn't have a keystroke logger. Typing activity (for example, in text-based responses if any) within the HireVue interface may be captured as part of that specific exercise, but general typing activity on your device is not monitored.
What happens if I accidentally close the HireVue tab mid-interview? Most HireVue interfaces allow you to resume from where you left off if you reopen the session link. The interview is not auto-failed. Check your invitation email for the session link you can reopen.
Does HireVue record during the technical coding test? Possibly — it depends on the employer's configuration. If screen sharing is required, you'll see an explicit browser permission dialog. If no dialog appears, your screen is not being shared.
Will HireVue tell the employer I used an AI tool? HireVue cannot detect off-screen AI tools. What matters more is whether your answers reflect genuine understanding of the role — competency-based scoring evaluates whether your responses are relevant and coherent, not whether they were drafted with assistance.
